GENERAL QUESTIONS:

Question: Can you help me find low-income housing?

Answer: CSD does not handle housing issues.  You can contact the California Department of Housing and Community Development for assistance in this matter.

Question: I am having problems with my landlord, who can I contact?

Answer: One resource for landlord/tenant issues is the Department of Consumer Affairs. They also offer several publications through their website which may be of assistance.

Question: Does CSD provide assistance with homeless services?

Answer: CSD funds local CSBG service providers that offer food, shelter, counseling, and referral to other homeless services. Visit the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) Program page for information on the CSBG program or locate the Community Action Agency or Additional Community Partner in your county/service area to obtain information and a referral to homeless services in your area.

Question: Who provides homeless funding at the state level?

Answer: The Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) administers emergency housing for the homeless and provides funding to homeless shelters.  Also, the Department of Mental Health (DMH) administers grants for assistance in transition from homelessness.  Check the California Department of Education (CDE) web site for information on the education of homeless children.

Question: Can CSD help me find a job?

Answer: The use of Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) funds is locally determined by communities that receive grants from CSD. Many of CSD's network of community services partners provide employment and job training services and related supportive services, and/or referrals to local One-Stop Career Centers and the California Employment Development Department (EDD) office in their service area. If you are a low-income resident of California who is seeking employment or wishing to upgrade your job skills, you can visit the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) Program page for information on the CSBG program or locate the Community Action Agency or Additional Community Partner in your county/service area to obtain information and a referral to employment and job training services in your area.

Question: Does CSD have an Apprenticeship Program for low-income students?

Answer: No, but CSD encourages its statewide network of community services providers to enter into community partnerships with students, employers, educators, government and community-based groups to establish apprenticeship programs for young people leaving California's high schools who are not equipped with the entry level skills they need to perform the jobs our modern, competitive economy is creating. For additional information on California's Apprenticeship Programs, contact the California Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Apprenticeship Standards.
